How Failing is a Dream Come True

Listen, nobody wants to fail, right? Wrong.

I am totally stoked for failure.  Do you want to see someone all in on getting it wrong? That would be me.  Here’s why – purposefully collecting failures is way harder than you might think.

In November 2017, I set out to write and publish 3 failed romance novels.  I found an editor (the lovely Olivia Maclean from Call of the Word) and asked her to edit my novel. My goal? To fail in the most earnest way possible.  I wrote the best book I could in the time I gave myself, vowing to publish it on Valentine’s day, 2018.   I sent her the manuscript and my intention – 3 failed novels.

“Yeah,” she said.  “You’re going to have to try again because I don’t think this one will fail.”

What happened next was a whirlwind of starting a business, getting a website, finding a book cover, learning how to sell a book on Amazon, a stunning amount of new experiences.  And everything I tried was a joy. Why? Because I was just trying to see what I could do. I had no expectations about the results. I only expected myself to show up and do my best.

Do you see what freedom that is?  Imagine something you’ve always wanted to try.  Did you really stop and do that? What is something that you always wondered if you could do?

What if the results of your attempt were not relevant to you? What if all you cared about was that you tried?

I double-dog-dare you to set a goal to fail at something you’ve always wanted to do.

And yeah, I do have two dogs.

Go you!
